As a celebration of the 750s anniversary of Berlin, this zone was converted into a museum, with the Gestapo cellar excavated and brought to light.
how sad.
The intention of taking care of this area led to an architectural competition in 1992, in order to design a permanent museum and documentation center. Architect Peter Zumthor won, his submission calling for an extended three-story building with a framework consisting of concrete rods. Subsequent design and first construction of the core concrete structures began but soon stopped due to funding problems.
After standing still for a decade and $18. million already spent, politicians decided to give up Zumthor’s plan and the unfinished stubs were finally demolished in 2004, as a new building byHeinle, Wischer und Partner was built.
